By checking your blood pressure regularly, you can work with your healthcare team to make sure your blood pressure stays at a healthy level.

are four things to keep in mind when checking your blood pressure:
1.
Check your blood pressure at the same time every day.
It
is best to check your blood pressure at the same time each day. This will help
you get an accurate reading of your numbers. Try to check your blood pressure
at the same time each day, such as in the morning before breakfast or at night
before bedtime.
2.
Sit still and relaxed for 5 minutes before checking your blood pressure.
Before
taking your blood pressure, sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor and
your back supported. Rest quietly for 5 minutes before taking your reading. Do
not smoke or drink caffeine for 30 minutes before checking your blood pressure.
It
is important to use a standard home blood pressure monitor. You can buy one at
most pharmacies or online retailers. Be sure to follow the instructions that
come with the monitor. Do not use an Automatic Arm Cuff Blood Pressure Monitor
as these are not as accurate as standard home monitors.
4.
Take 3 readings and average them together.
When
taking your blood pressure, take 3 readings one minute apart and average them
together. Write down all 3 numbers and show them to your healthcare team at
your next visit.
